Reed Kasaoka is the head buyer of the Sports Division at Dave & Adam's. His primary responsibility is traveling all over the country, buying private collections out of people’s closets, bedrooms, attics, basements, garages, and storage units, as well as complete inventories of show dealers, shop owners, autograph dealers, and distributors. Reed comes up with some amazing finds – rarely seen unopened boxes, quality graded cards, certified autographed memorabilia, and much more.
We have tagged all of his acquisitions as a Reed Buy so you’ll know where to look first for all of his deals. Almost every item is “one-of-a-kind” – so when you see something interesting, don’t hesitate, because there are likely many other collectors who are thinking the exact same thing!
1981 Topps Football Wax Pack (direct from Topps Fun Bags)
5 packs per lot/15 cards per pack
History of Fun Bags
From the mid-1970s into the early 1980s, Topps came up with a unique way to get rid of their excess
pack inventory, creating these "fun packs" with 25 assorted packs - usually a mix of four or five different
packs from sport and non-sport issues - at a deeply discounted price that appealed to retailers
(attractive, high margin sales) as well as Topps (salvage some value for old and outdated stock;
remember, back in the day, Topps was a bubble gum company that happened to sell cards, not the
other way around.) Today, these "fun packs" are known in the hobby as "fun bags" because, well, it just
sounds better.
Origins of this deal
There are many variations and combinations of products and years, including 1979/80 Topps Hockey
Wax Packs (Wayne Gretzky rookie) and 1980/81 Topps Basketball Wax Packs (Bird/Magic rookie), but
this version is no slouch. Originally purchased back in 1982 by the seller's father in central Connecticut,
at one time he had over 100 of these fun bags - you can see the "$1.00" price tag from the retail store
still attached to many of the bags! These bags contain:
10 - 1981 Topps Football Wax Packs (Joe Montana, Art Monk, Dan Hampton, Kellen Winslow rookies)
6 - 1981/82 Topps Hockey Wax Packs (Jari Kurri rookie, 3 rd year Wayne Gretzky)
5 - 1981 Topps Raiders of the Lost Ark Wax Packs
4 - 1981 Topps Tattoos Oversized Packs
We purchased almost 80 fun bags - an insane amount, even back in 1982!
"Factory Sealed"
More than ever, collectors are trained to be obsessive over "factory sealed" product - to ensure the box
is the way it came from the factory and untampered. Topps didn't start shrinkwrapping boxes for mass
market until the early 1990s (though they did wrap select boxes as far back as the mid-1980s, but that's
for another discussion.) Technically, the only factory sealed products Topps made prior to this are wax
trays (three wax packs on a cardboard backing and shrinkwrapped, produced from the late 1960
through 1980) and fun bags. Because these fun bags were packaged by Topps, you can feel extremely
confident these packs are clean and untampered.
The key Rookie Card in this set is Joe Montana. Other Rookie Cards include Dwight Clark, Vince Evans, Dan Hampton, Art Monk, Eddie Murray, Billy Sims and Kellen Winslow.
