We began Episode 313 of The Chase, and Troy’s final episode as host, by talking about Wyatt Langford. The Texas Rangers youngster hit for the cycle over the weekend and we were curious if this occasion would have any immediate impact on his card market. The answer: a definitive “kind of”.
One of his Base 1st Bowman Autographs sold for $950 on April 5th of this year. This is the most expensive sale of one of these cards, and the timing of that makes sense. Just two weeks earlier, Langford was officially called up from AAA. MLB fans and prospectors anxiously awaiting his MLB Debut had to wait no longer.
Ever since though, his market dried up a touch. A $510.69 sale on June 30th marked the most anyone had paid for the exact same card that sold for $950 in April since that very sale. In the days to come, some would sell for just under $500, and one buyer would even snag one for $350. By my account, that’s highway robbery!
If you look at some of the best young players in Major League Baseball, their Base 1st Bowman Autographs are selling for roughly $900 – $1,200. A lot can certainly happen, but I think Langford is primed to break out a la Bobby Witt Jr., Gunnar Henderson, and Elly De La Cruz. You should never overreact to a single game if you’re trying to make a sensible Hobby investment, so now that the dust he kicked up while hitting for the cycle has settled, it’s the perfect time to add some of his cards to your personal collection. What do you think?
