2015 Topps Dynasty Baseball is due out this Wednesday (December 16) and there are a few interesting names on the checklist that aren’t on any MLB team, but have ties to the game.
Three NFL quarterbacks, John Elway, Dan Marino and Russell Wilson, that also played baseball before their professional football careers began have patch auto cards in 2015 Dynasty.
Elway was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1981 and played in their minor league system before becoming a Super Bowl winning QB with the Denver Broncos. He even threatened to choose baseball over football after he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1983, but relented after he was traded to Denver. Elway appears in Dynasty wearing Yankee pinstripes.
The Kansas City Royals actually selected two future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks in the 1979 MLB Draft. They were the first team to draft John Elway (21st round) before he became a Yankee. Before picking Elway they drafted fellow “Class of ’83” member Dan Marino in the fourth round from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for the Royals the only time Marino pitched in a MLB ballpark was when he threw out a first pitch on two different occasions (Pirates in 2013, Marlins in 2014). Marino sports the colors of the 2015 World Series champs in Dynasty.
More recently, Russell Wilson was a fourth round pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2010. Wilson played two seasons in the Rockies’ farm system before recommitting himself to football, but that didn’t stop the Texas Rangers from taking him in the 2013 Rule 5 Draft. Wilson has auto relics in Dyansty with Rangers memorabilia pieces.
It was previously reported that actor Will Ferrell would appear in Dynasty after showing up in 2015 Topps Archives. You will be able to find Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Arizona Diamondbacks patch autos featuring Ferrell in 2015 Topps Dynasty
