2015 Topps Archives Signature Series is a unique autograph buyback product that was released earlier this month. Every box features an autograph buyback card plucked from Topps’s 60-year history of producing baseball cards. Many of the cards come from Topps’s flagship Baseball products, but Topps threw in a few curveballs as well. Here’s five of the more obscure or strange sets that found it’s way in to Archives Signature Series.
5. 1989 Hills Team MVPs
“Hills is where the toys are!” That was a commercial jingle from my childhood that I will never forget. You could also find trading cards at Hills. Topps produced sets for a number of department store chains in the 1980s & 90s, including this one in 1989. Sadly, Hills was purchased by Ames in the mid 1990s, but it still lives on in the memories of children that grew up in that era.
4. 1985 Circle K
Tigers legend Al Kaline signed cards that were produced during his playing career for Archives Signature Series, but he also signed a few that were released after he retired. This set was sold at Circle K stores in 1985 that featured 33 different baseball greats.
3. 1982 Drake’s Cakes
These cards were found in packages of delicious Drake’s snack food cakes. Drake’s Big Hitters were produced from 1981 through 1988. This Jim Rice is from the 1982 set
2. Various years KMart
KMart was another department store chain that sold trading card set produced specially for them. You can find several different years of KMart cards in Archives Signature Series. The 20th and 25th Anniversary cards pictured refer to the opening of the first KMart store in 1962.
1.1986 Quaker Chewy Granola Bars
Steve Garvey signed a lot of cards for Signature Series, including ones that were found in packaged if Quaker Chewy Granola Bars in 1986. Not only do you get to see Garvey’s face on the front of the card, but also Quaker Oats guy as well.
2015 Topps Archives Signature Series is a fun product because it gives collectors a chance to find autographs from some memorable players of different eras as well as the chance to reminisce about sets they might have forgotten about.
