There’s a romantic element to the hobby bounties that Dave & Adam’s post.
You’ll understand that in a moment as we introduce you to Jeff Adissi, the man who recently accepted our $150,000 offer for the MLB Debut Patch of Yankees Shortstop Anthony Volpe from 2023 Topps Chrome Update.
Collectors jokingly referred to it as the one that wouldn’t surface, given the product’s release seven months ago. That sentiment held until this past Father’s Day.
Adissi was born with baseball running through his veins. In the short amount of time spent with him, you could tell two things: his love for baseball and his love for his father.
When you walk through the doors of his SoCal home, you’re immediately in a baseball historian’s dream. Framed news articles congratulating the Houston Astros on their World Series win are on the wall, and autographed jerseys with World Series patches are proudly displayed on the adjacent wall to decorate the halls of Jeff’s place.
Your attention quickly turns to the room next to the memorabilia, where a sign above reading “PTB” is posted. Those three letters represent his most recent venture, Pine Tar Breaks.
A veteran of the industry, Adissi decided to go it alone and take that leap of faith that some in this hobby are afraid to take for a multitude of reasons.
Jeff speaks fondly of his father and memories of watching the Houston Astros growing up in SoCal with his pops, making sure they saw Nolan Ryan pitch when he was in town, and even getting to hang out with “The Ryan Express” on multiple occasions.
He also speaks of his father’s encouragement, which makes Pine Tar Breaks all the more sense.
Unfortunately, Jeff lost his father in 2018, but he still carries on the collecting passion that he and his father shared.
Jeff told us he bought a couple of cases of the 2023 Topps Chrome Update directly from Topps and decided to sit on them since its release last November.
Father’s Day rolls around, and Jeff decides he will open one of the Update cases with a hunch and confidence that the Debut Patch was in the case he had sitting on his shelf for so many months.
In honor of his late father, who always sent him messages of perseverance in different forms, Jeff decided to make the break classy by putting on his father’s watch and giving the cards white glove service in the purest sense of the term.
When you go back and watch the clip of Jeff pulling the card, you notice without a sound that he knows he has something that could, well, be worth $150,000 in his hands as the white tape with the red Topps logo appears on the box as he peels the pack apart.
As he reveals the card over the sound of soft piano playing, Jeff points to the printed-out graphic of our bounty stood up and displayed in his background, almost as if Babe Ruth was calling his shot. As poetic as you could be, Jeff utters, “Thank you, Dad. Happy Father’s Day.”
When asked what he’d do with the $150,000, Jeff’s answer was quite simple. He plans to take his wife on a vacation, in his words, a long time in the making.
Congratulations, Jeff.
