Toronto Blue Jays Top Prospect Gabriel Moreno Earns Call-Up

The Toronto Blue Jays have called up top prospect, Gabriel Moreno, from the team’s AAA-affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons. The 22-year-old catcher is expected to meet the Jays in Detroit, making his highly anticipated debut at some point during their three-game series this weekend.

The call-up comes on the heels of a bone fracture to the hand of Blue Jays’ Catcher Danny Jensen putting him on the injured list. Now, hat doesn’t mean the spot is Moreno’s for the taking. He’ll have to overcome the recent hot play of Alejandro Kirk to earn playing time.

Moreno is currently heralded as Baseball America’s #5 overall prospect and #4 on MLB Pipeline’s rankings.

Moreno is, hopefully, the Blue Jays’ catcher of the future, and a figurehead for the story of player development, after he was signed for a mere $25,000 as a 16-year-old infield prospect in 2016. The now 22-year-old Venezuelan catcher has done nothing but turn heads in his ascension of the minor league ranks, beginning as a 17-year-old back in 2017.

This season in Buffalo, Moreno boasted a .323 batting average to go along with 23 RBIs through 35 games. The young catcher has also grown into quite the asset defensively.

Earlier this week, we were lucky enough to host Gabriel for an in-store autograph signing at our Buffalo retail location! Check out the video below:

We wish nothing but the best for Gabriel in his transition to the big leagues!
