A collector sent us a picture of a unique find from a box of 2006 Topps Heritage Baseball. Instead of an autograph or a piece of memorabilia, it is what was missing from the card that made it interesting…
This is an Alex Gordon rookie card from 2006 Topps Heritage with the picture of Gordon cut out. Topps mistakenly produced the card (plus a 2006 Topps Baseball one) before Gordon signed his MLB contract, and could not release it with his image. Copies of the card were destroyed but they still managed to find their way into packs. Just like other error cards this one attracts interest from collectors. One recently sold on eBay for $155.
Gordon’s 2006 Topps Series 1 Baseball card has several different versions, including ones with the image cut out and the image intact.
There was renewed interest in the cards after Gordon and the Kansas City Royals made it to the World Series this past October. For more on the 2006 Alex Gordon Topps rookie cards I suggest reading this article from Beckett and a blog post written by ESPN’s Keith Olbermann for MLB.
