When 2014 Bowman Draft Baseball comes out on December 10 there might be one player in the set that looks out of place. Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will have his own autograph card in Bowman Draft Baseball wearing a San Diego Padres jersey. “Johnny Football Baseball” was selected in the 28th round of the MLB draft by the Padres just in case he had second thoughts about his football career. Manziel donned a Padres uniform when the team invited him to throw out the first pitch at a game this past season.

He’s not the first NFL quarterback that’s been drafted by an MLB team. John Elway was drafted by the Yankees in the 1980s. When the Baltimore Colts drafted Elway in 1983 he threatened that he would go play baseball in New York instead of starting under center for the Colts. Of course they traded him to Denver and the rest is history. Drew Henson was playing in the Yankees organization when the former Michigan quarterback was drafted by the Houston Texans. Henson retired from baseball and went on to play in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions as a backup. With Manziel’s lack of playing time in Cleveland this year maybe he’ll think about reporting to spring training this February.
